Do I need separate builder trailer insurance?
You should take out dedicated trailer insurance for your own peace of mind if you use a trailer as part of your business to carry out contract works.
While not a legal liability, it should be an element of your annual business insurance portfolio and your trailer cover can complement any public liability insurance you have in place.
Most comprehensive car and van insurance policies only cover trailers for third party liability.
It means you would be covered for any injury to a third party or damage to their property, but your policy would not pay out if your trailer was damaged in an accident that was your fault. You would also not be covered for theft or fire damage.
Sterling’s insurance for trailers can solve these issues. So call us, our best deals are available over the phone.

- The weight of your builder trailer and contents must be within the vehicle’s towing ability and not more than 85% of the car’s kerbside weight if the builder trailer has brakes – 50% if it hasn’t. (Depending on when you passed your driving test the towing allowance may differ. Check for the latest Department for Transport advice.)
- Maximum builders trailer width in the UK and EU is 2.55m.
- Indicators, lights and brakes (where fitted) must work and the trailer must display the same number plate as the towing vehicle.
- Builders trailer speed limits on UK roads are 60mph for motorways and dual carriageways and 50mph on single carriageway roads. Builders trailers cannot use the outside lane of a motorway.
