Do you need separate trailer insurance for boats?
If you ever tow a trailer carrying a dinghy or a boat, you should take out insurance for your boat trailer.
Most comprehensive car and van insurance policies cover trailers, but usually only for third party liability. It means you would be covered for injury to another person or damage to their property, but not if your trailer was damaged in an accident that was your fault. You would also not be covered for theft or fire damage.
Sterling’s specialist boat trailer insurance can help solve these problems. The best deals are available over the phone.

Are there any safety guidelines that I need to know if I am towing a trailer?
- The weight of your boat trailer and contents must be within the vehicle’s towing ability and not more than 85% of the car’s kerbside weight if the boat trailer has brakes – 50% if it hasn’t. (Depending on when you passed your driving test the towing allowance may differ. Check for the latest Department for Transport advice.)
- Maximum boat trailer width in the UK and EU is 2.55m.
- Indicators, lights and brakes (where fitted) must work and the boat trailer must display the same number plate as the towing vehicle.
- Boat trailer speed limits on UK roads are 60mph for motorways and dual carriageways and 50mph on single carriageway roads. Boat trailers are prohibited from the outside lane of a motorway.
