When are e-scooters likely to become road legal?
E-scooter trials are still taking place across the UK. Although they were originally supposed to end in November 2022, local participating authorities have been given the option to either end their trial or extend it until the end of May 2024. This has therefore affected when e-scooter are likely to become road legal.

Frequently asked questions
Will e-scooter insurance be a legal requirement once private e-scooters are allowed on public roads?
E-scooter legislation hasn’t yet been finalised – it’s likely that this will happen only when the trials have been concluded. However, if you’re thinking of buying a private e-scooter to use once they become road legal, it might be worth considering e-scooter insurance.
Given that e-scooters are fairly fast and quiet, they have their own unique risks on the road. They can also be an attractive target to thieves. Taking out insurance can help protect your e-scooter if anything happens.
Can I cover my e-scooter on my home or contents insurance policy?
This will depend on your home and contents insurance policy. Given how new e-scooters are to the market, it’s unlikely that it will be covered. It’s unlikely that any home insurance policy will cover your scooter while it’s being used on the roads.
Do I need to have a driving licence to use an e-scooter?
In order to take part in the current e-scooter trials, you need a full or provisional driving licence to rent one. It is still not clear if you’ll need a licence to ride a private e-scooter once the trials have been completed. Register to get notified when our e-scooter insurance goes live and we can let you know the requirements when you get a quote.
